What is an Allergy?

True classic allergies can be life threatening in some individuals and can cause anaphylaxis.

·Typical allergy symptoms tend to be immediate and can take the form of swelling of lips or throat, skin rash or hives, vomiting or breathing problems.

The symptoms are caused by an IgE immune mechanism which is different to the IgG antibodies discussed below.

If you suspect you have an allergy then your must consult your Doctor immediately or go to your nearest A&E hospital.

What is Food Intolerance?

It is a delayed immune reaction to food allergens that may cause unpleasant symptoms

The symptoms are caused by an non IgE (typically IgG) immune mechanism which is different to an classical allergy response involving an IgE reaction

Ongoing research continues in these immune mechanisms

It is associated with a wide range of recurrent, chronic conditions, and can involve many organ systems

Some of the symptoms and conditions are listed above

Food intolerance is unlikely to be life threatening

Frequently common foods are usually implicated

The reaction, symptom may be observed hours or several days after the offending food has been ingested
